Social media isn't the same

Instant messenger and chatroom's:

This might the weirdest post of this blog in probably many ways. One, because we have been talking about gaming and movies as of recent and I have been gone for little while. But I do think that there is a back then and a now when it comes to social media. See, I grew up during a time that IM and chatting was the thing that you did the most socializing when online. If you're asking what IM is, it's short for Instant Messaging. Which is wild today because today that is pretty much what we have now.

Yet, it was basically Yahoo IM, or you went onto Google and tried to find a chatroom. Which at the time there were plenty of free chatroom's. It was fun, you got to chat with a lot of different people. Also, on top of that a lot of the chartroom's were categorized. Meaning you were able to jump into a chatroom to talk about a specific thing and in most cases be in more than one chatroom at the same time. Which, now looking at it feels more like Reddit without the craziness and a lot cleaner. 

Difference between MySpace and modern social medias:

Then moving away from the IM, we got to experience MySpace. And oh boy do I have memories of that platform. Honestly, looking at social media today and looking at what MySpace was nothing truly compares. And if you think FaceBook and X is better. I guess you never experienced the customization freedom we had with MySpace. And truly making our space our own. You had people on your friends list that you actually knew. Was able to make a top friend list, and also add music, different fonts, and backgrounds to your page. 

You were able to change it whenever you wanted to and also write your status as you would in any social media platform. The truth of the matter is that it was ahead of its time, and yet nothing can compare to it till this day. The biggest thing now, is actual video media. The fact that video media has blown up has truly turned the page in this space. What do I mean by this? Well let's just say there's ads everywhere and it's easy for anyone to just post up things. 

Easy access to social media and in crease of outrages posts:

I will say personally not everything posted is good, neither during the time of MySpace. But now people having easy access to social media now. It feels like we are seeing things that at one point seemed to be one person's dark and twisted private thoughts. It has gone to the point where free speech is dumb speech. If you're wondering what I mean by that I'll break it down as simple as possible. 

I believe in free speech, but let's be honest here. Not everything should be said, some thoughts should stay as such personal or private all around. The issue is that now that there are platforms for people to say what they want to say, they think they can say it because in reality most people that follow them don't even know them personally. Meaning there is no need for feeling guilt or a feeling of possible consequences. I understand we all have opinions of things, and we all have the right to share those opinions. The issue is the lack of thinking prior to speaking or acting out.

The then and now feeling:

The reality today is this. Social media then was fun; you got to meet new people. Actually, have people you knew. Didn't have to worry about being in groups or circles, not worry about ads everywhere. You were able to make it your own. Now, mainly all politics and cyber bully's that would never say half the things they say on social media to an actual person because they feel there is no repercussion to their actions because they're sitting behind a screen typing away.

I will say that it's sad to see the change in everything now. I was excited about tech, and the growth of tech. Always have been up to date with tech and even currently in school for programming. But the fact of it all is that in the process of growth. The ugly started leaking out. And now what we see is mainly ugly and the companies that have built these social media platforms are making money off of an algorithm made to tame us and keep us in fear and disgust. Maybe there will be a day where this changes again but for the better. Till then I won't hold my breath. Tell me in the comments what do you think about social media now.
